Hair Transplant (FUE / FUT)

Redistribution of permanent donor follicles to restore hairline density and shape.

Local anaesthesia
Theatre time
6–10 hours
Downtime

Overview

Follicular units are harvested individually (FUE) or from a donor strip (FUT) and implanted to rebuild the hairline or add density. Donor supply is finite; medical therapy is usually recommended alongside to preserve existing hair.

What it changes

  • Hairline shape and position
  • Temporal recession
  • Density in thinning zones

Common goals

Lower or reshape the hairline
Rebuild temporal points
Increase density

Candidates

General factors a surgeon may consider. Only a qualified surgeon can assess whether you are a candidate.

  • General physical health suitable for the anaesthetic required
  • Realistic, clearly articulated aesthetic or functional goals
  • Stable anatomy appropriate for the technique proposed
  • Non-smoking or willingness to stop for the surgeon's required window

Surgical approach

  1. 01Donor harvest by FUE punch or strip excision
  2. 02Recipient site creation with angle and direction control
  3. 03Graft placement in a planned density gradient

Recovery timeline

  1. Day 1

Recipient area tender, tiny crusts form, sleep elevated.

  2. Week 1

Crusts wash away, redness fades, donor area healing.

  3. Week 2

Grafted hairs shed — expected and temporary.

  4. Week 4

Shedding phase complete; scalp looks similar to pre-op.

  5. Month 3

Early regrowth begins, often fine and wispy.

  6. Month 6

Roughly 50% of the result is visible.

  7. Month 12+

Final density and calibre at 12–18 months.

Risks & complications

Bleeding, haematoma, or infection
Temporary or, rarely, permanent nerve disturbance
Asymmetry or an outcome that differs from expectations
Scarring, delayed healing, or wound problems
Anaesthetic risks
Possible need for revision surgery
Shock loss of existing hair
Unnatural hairline design
Donor depletion or visible donor thinning
Folliculitis or cysts
Poor graft survival

Limitations

Does not create new hair — it redistributes existing follicles
Ongoing loss continues without medical therapy
Donor supply caps the achievable density
