Facial Implant Materials: Silicone, Medpor, PEEK, and Titanium

The trade-off

Smooth silicone is easy to place and remove but can migrate and may cause bone remodelling. Porous polyethylene integrates with surrounding tissue, which improves stability but makes removal harder.

Patient-specific PEEK or titanium implants are designed from CT data to fit the individual skeleton, reducing edge visibility and dead space at higher cost.

Infection and revision

Any alloplastic implant can become infected, sometimes years later, and infected implants usually need removal. Discuss the surgeon's rate, their fixation technique, and the revision plan before committing.
