How To Read Before-and-After Photographs Critically

5 min readEditorial overviewUpdated 2026-01-27

Standardisation matters

Comparable photographs share focal length, distance, lighting, background, head position, and expression. If the 'after' has better lighting, a lifted chin, or makeup, part of the improvement is photographic.

Selection bias

Galleries show best cases. Ask what percentage of cases look like the ones displayed, whether you can see unedited early post-op photographs, and how revisions are documented.
